Board Game On | Games 5.16

Welcome to the Adventure Begins Board Game Blog. I am your host, Samantha. Did you know Risk was invented by an OSCAR winner? Inventing a world-famous board game would likely be tops on the list of most people's lifetime accomplishments, but it was just a whimsical vacation project for Albert Lamorisse. The Frenchman created Risk, first known as "La Conquête du Monde," or "The Conquest of the World," while on a family trip to the Netherlands. But he was far better known as a filmmaker. The previous year, he'd even won an Academy Award for a short film called "The Red Balloon" that is still considered a classic to this day.

We have some amazing new games for you! We have two this week and let me tell you I want these two. They are so amazing!! I can’t wait to play them for myself.

The first game is Coimbra .In the 15th and 16th century, Portugal is thriving under its leading role during the Age of Discovery. Nestled in the heart of Portugal, the city of Coimbra serves as a cultural center of the country. As the head of one of Coimbra's oldest houses, you seek to earn prestige by deepening relationships with nearby monasteries or funding expeditions of the era. To reach this goal, you must vie for the favors of the city's most influential citizens, even if you must offer a bit of coin or some protective detail.

Coimbra introduces an innovative new dice mechanism in which the dice players draft each round are used in multiple different ways and have an impact on many aspects of their decision making. While there are many paths to victory, players should always seek to optimize their opportunities with every roll of the dice. Combined with ever-changing synergies of the citizens, expeditions, and monasteries, no two games of Coimbra will ever be the same!

Our second game this week is Kardashev Scale. The Kardashev scale is a method of measuring a civilization’s level of technological advancement based on the amount of energy it is able to use.

  • A Type I civilization, also called a Planetary civilization — can use and store all of the energy available on its planet.
  • A Type II civilization, also called a Stellar civilization — can use and control energy at the scale of its planetary system.
  • A Type III civilization, also called a Galactic civilization — can use and control energy at the scale of its entire host galaxy.

Race your neighboring planets for control of the galaxy by achieving technological and cultural advancements that harness the energy of your people and your planet. Engage in conflict, trade, or research as a means to cultivate your civilization, capture the energy of your home star, and ultimately the energy of the entire galaxy! The most advanced civilization at the end of the game wins!

Each round, you'll choose one of four actions to perform at a Summit: collecting one of 3 types of resources or purchasing Advancements. In a rock-paper-scissors fashion, you will compare your chosen action to the actions chosen by your left and right neighbors. Win against one or both of them, and you'll collect 2 of your chosen resources. Tie and you'll gain 1. Lose, and you gain nothing. If you chose instead to Advance, you won't get any resources (and your neighbors will each gain 2 of their chosen resource), you will be able to purchase an Advancement card which will give you VPs and allow you to start building your engine. The game ends once one player reaches 25 or more VPs, and the player with the most points is the winner!
