Get your Board GAME ON!

Not your traditional games anymore, board games have grown significantly in popularity and enjoyment.  They can be a great way to meet new friends or even get involved in your community, creating a great entertainment resource. These days board games have a gigantic variety to choose from and vary widely in type and genre. There’s table-top games, board games, card games just to name a few options.

BUT, how do YOU get started playing games? 

One way to accomplish this is to visit your local shop and check out some game boxes….that’s right. Read boxes, see what type of games look interesting, buy and open that box!  Then visit and visit again!

You can also straight-up ask your local shop employee, “Excuse me?...... What games are good for newer gamers?” See what games they recommend based on your interests.  Board games had me when I saw (and of course bought!)  the JAWS board game. From that moment, I was hooked!  So, think about what you like…..fun and quick, strategizing, battling, following scenarios, building, family…...and on and on and literally on!  There are games for everyone.

Another way to figure out what interests you is by watching other players. Find out when groups and clubs will be in-store so you can watch them play. This is also a great way to learn some basics about popular board games. Most of the time it is easier to experience what interests you instead of just reading about it. Ask other gamers if you can watch or ask questions about what they're playing. It can also be a great way to join in and test out a game. Many game stores also have demo games you can sample and try out. This is a great way to see what certain games are all about and how they can grow with expansion sets and other additions to the base game.

Of course, a big consideration is expense. Don’t think you have to break the bank to get into gaming, because you don’t!! Games can start from $20 (for example Exploding Kittens) and range into the hundreds depending on the type of game and how involved you plan to get.

Seriously, while I work for a game store now, I got started in gaming by checking out my local shop, roaming around to see what games were on display, what games were being played, and what games piqued my interest.  I played a few games out on the tables, read some boxes, and took recommendations from store employees.

So now it’s time to do a little research, go to your local shop, and pick your first board game. Woo-Hoo! You can be a gamer too.
